António de Sousa

Tony De Sousa nasceu a 7 de junho de 1957, na Lourinhã em Portugal, o mais novo de três filhos. Em 1970 a sua família mudou-se para Toronto, no Canadá. Dois anos depois, aos 15 anos, começou a trabalhar na padaria do seu irmão “Sousa’s Bakery” onde conheceu a sua futura companheira de vida, Luísa. No ano de 1987, os dois criaram o seu próprio negócio – Early Morning Star Gardening and Landscaping. Sem esquecer as suas raízes, mantiveram as tradições portuguesas e, em 1996, Tony De Sousa tornou-se membro do Clube Português de Mississauga e no mesmo ano juntiu-se ao conselho administrativo. Enquanto o clube procurava uma nova localização, Tony e Luísa foram parte do comité de angariação de fundos e produção de eventos, trabalhando arduamente para que o sonho se tornasse realidade. Em 2015 foi nomeado Presidente do PCCM, função que desempenhou até falecer em 2021.

Tony De Sousa foi impulsionador de muitas conquistas feitas pelo Clube para a nossa comunidade. Em setembro de 2019, Tony criou o primeiro “Arraial” com atuação de artistas locais da comunidade. Sempre foi um grande apoiante da juventude e do seu grupo de folclore. A devoção para com a comunidade e promoção da nossa cultura ficaram marcados como uma das suas missões de vida. Em 2018, foi presenteado com o Civic Award da cidade de Mississauga e no ano seguinte, recebeu o Community Heritage Award.

Tony De Sousa was born on June 7, 1957, in Lourinhã, in Portugal, the youngest of three children. In 1970 his family moved to Toronto, Canada. Two years later, at the age of 15, he started working at his brother’s bakery “Sousa’s Bakery” where he met his future life partner, Luisa. In 1987, the two started their own business – Early Morning Star Gardening and Landscaping. Without forgetting their roots, they maintained their Portuguese traditions and, in 1996, Tony De Sousa became a member of the Portuguese Club of Mississauga and in the same year joined the board of directors. While the club was looking for a new location, Tony and Luisa were part of the fundraising and event production committee, working hard to make the dream come true. In 2015 he was appointed President of PCCM, a position he held until he passed away in 2021.

Tony De Sousa was a driving force behind many achievements made by the Club for our community. In September 2019, Tony created the first “Arraial” with performances by local artists from the community. He has always been a great supporter of the youth and their folklore group. Devotion to the community and promotion of our culture have become marked as one of his life missions. In 2018, he was presented with the Civic Award from the City of Mississauga and the following year, he received the Community Heritage Award.
