Luso-Can Tuna was baptized on March 14, 1998, in Toronto, Canada, by their mui ilustre e nobre godmother tuna, the Tuna Académica da Universidade dos Açores (TAUA), becoming the only Portuguese tuna in North America. In the last 26 years, Luso-Can Tuna have worked hard to support Luso-Canadian youth across the greater Toronto Area to Maintain connections to their culture through teaching music, language, and history. In maintaining this Portuguese academic tradition, Luso-Can Tuna has worked hard to emphasize the value of education, camaraderie, and music to the younger generations of the Lusophone community in Toronto. Over the years, Luso-Can Tuna has grown, learned, and evolved. Above all, the band has become a means to spread joy, friendship, and bohemia. Luso-Can Tuna has visited and performed across various parts of Portugal, the United States of America, France, Mexico and most recently, Spain. Through the years Luso-Can Tuna has been recognized for their e orts, proudly earning an Order of Merit (Ordem do Mérito). Luso-Can Tuna has also continued the tradition of music festivals in Canada with their own festival, the Festival Internacional de Tunas no Canadá (FITCa). In March of 2018, Luso-Can Tuna celebrated their 20thanniversary with the release of their first original CD, Carpe Diem. Luso-Can Tuna has also maintained their spirit and skill by practicing digitally through the COVID-19 pandemic, and, in continuing to make the best of hard situations, put on a virtual FITCa in 2021. Most recently, in celebration of their 25th anniversary, Luso-Can Tuna created, planned, and executed a festival called Lusofonia. Lusofonia spanned across three days, bringing together the community in a celebration of Portuguese culture.
The primary objectives of this tuna continue to promote pride and interest of their culture in Lusophone youth, create opportunities for new cultural expressions based in tradition, and represent the Luso-Canadian community wherever they go. Most notably and proudly, Luso-Can Tuna acts as a testament to the Portuguese-Canadian community’s strength, pride, teamwork, and willpower in maintaining these traditions (and plays some great music while they do so).
